On the eve of discovery….. Natraj at CERN !

Text of the Plaque under the statue ——

” Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, seeing beyond the unsurpassed rhythm, beauty, power and grace of the Nataraja, once wrote of it “It is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or religion can boast of.”

Recently, Fritjof Capra elaborated,  “Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter,” and that “For the modern physicists, then, Shiva’s dance is the dance of subatomic matter.”

Capra also explains : “Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.”

‘The statue of Nataraja – the Cosmic Dancer ‘, Dr. Aymar, DG of CERN, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission

Fritjof Capra in his article titled “The Dance of Shiva: The Hindu View of Matter in the Light of Modern Physics,” published in Main Currents in Modern Thought in 1972 put forward the comparison between the Shiva’s cosmic dance at the time of the creation and the metaphorical dance of subatomic particle at the very beginning of the universe. These beautiful and poetic excerpts may well be produced purely due to the awe in which we all find ourselves while dwindling on these fundamental questions about our origin and existence, nonetheless they celebrate the very  spirit of human kind to embark upon the journey of finding things out !

Hopefully today, we will witness the first incontrovertible evidence of the illusive Higgs Boson presented by CERN. Trying to find the particle may be one of the major goals, the exuberance with which the whole world awaits the discovery is quite an achievement to all of those working to find sharp and ignited minds entering this area of research and also popularizing the various areas of science. Today, lets just celebrate the anxiousness and the thrill of the pure science and let alone the consequences of this discovery !
